    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Getting Started

I've never trained Jiu Jitsu before. Can I join?

Absolutely. Many of our members started with no previous martial arts experience.

Our beginner-friendly classes are designed to introduce you to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu progressively, and our instructors will help you understand where to start.

You don't need to get fit before starting — training can be part of how you get fit.

Do you offer a free trial?

Yes. We offer trial classes for new students at Grand Union Brighton.

A trial is the best way to meet our team, experience a class and see whether Grand Union is right for you.

    [BOOK YOUR FREE TRIAL]

Do I need to book before coming?

For your first class, we recommend booking your trial in advance so we know you're coming and can make sure you join the most appropriate class.

What should I bring to my first class?

For your first trial, comfortable sports clothing is fine unless we've advised you otherwise.

Bring a water bottle and avoid clothing with zips, buttons or anything that could scratch you or your training partner.

We'll explain everything else when you arrive.

Am I too old or unfit to start?

No. Adults begin Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at many different ages and fitness levels.

You train at your own level and build your fitness, movement and confidence progressively.

    Kids Jiu Jitsu

    What ages do you teach?

Our Kids Programme is divided into age-appropriate groups:

    4–6 years
    7–9 years
    10–13 years
    Teens 14–17 years

This allows us to adapt the teaching, class structure and expectations to each stage of development.

    What will my child learn?

Our Kids Programme goes far beyond Jiu Jitsu techniques.

We use Jiu Jitsu to help children develop confidence, discipline, respect, resilience, teamwork and self-defence skills in a positive and supportive environment.

    Can parents watch the class?

Yes. Parents are welcome to watch their child's trial and see how our classes are taught.

Does my child need a Gi for the trial?

No. For the first trial, comfortable sports clothing is sufficient. If your child decides to join, we'll explain the uniform requirements.

    Training

Do you teach both Gi and No-Gi?

Yes. We offer both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Training both allows students to experience different styles of grappling and develop a more complete understanding of Jiu Jitsu.

    Do I have to spar?

Beginners are introduced to live training progressively.

We want students to understand the fundamental positions and learn how to train safely before increasing the intensity.

There is no pressure to compete, and our coaches will help you progress at an appropriate pace.

    Do I have to compete?

    No.

Some of our members enjoy competition and we support students who want to compete, but many people train purely for fitness, self-defence, personal development, social connection and enjoyment.

    Competition is entirely optional.

How does the belt system work?

Progress is based on a combination of factors including technical development, consistency, attitude, understanding, performance and time spent training.

We hold two main grading events each year, traditionally in summer and winter.

There is no additional grading fee.

    Membership

Do you offer different membership options?

Yes. We offer membership options for children and adults depending on how frequently you would like to train.

Please visit our Membership page for current prices and options.

    Do you offer family discounts?

Yes. We offer family options for households with multiple members training with us. Contact us and we'll help you find the most suitable membership.

Can I pay for individual classes?

Yes. PAYG options are available for selected classes.

Your first step, however, is normally to book a trial so we can recommend the most suitable programme for you.

Can I freeze or cancel my membership?

Yes. Membership freezes and cancellations are available subject to the terms of your membership.

Please contact us directly if your circumstances change and we'll explain the options available to you.

I would NOT write “one month's notice” here unless you're certain that will remain your policy after the GoCardless/Gymdesk migration. Put contractual details in your membership terms rather than creating contradictions between the website and contract.
