How Are Classes Divided?
Find the right class for your level
Our Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programme is designed to give every student a clear pathway to progress, from their first day on the mats through to advanced training.
Each class has a different purpose, allowing students to develop their technique, understanding and confidence progressively.
BEGINNERS
Our Beginners classes provide a structured introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and are the ideal starting point for anyone with little or no previous experience.
The focus is on understanding the fundamental positions, movements and concepts of Jiu Jitsu in a controlled environment.
Students learn how to move, control positions, escape safely and begin connecting techniques together.
Level: Beginners / White Belts
Duration: 45 minutes
Focus: Fundamentals, technique, movement and controlled positional training
No previous experience required.
FUNDAMENTALS
Our Fundamentals Programme forms the foundation of the Grand Union teaching system and is suitable for students who want to build a strong understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
The programme follows our structured 12-week cycle, covering the major positions in Jiu Jitsu from both the attacking and defensive perspective.
Students develop their technique, movement, coordination and understanding of how different positions connect together.
Level: All belts
Duration: 60 minutes
Focus: Fundamental techniques, positional understanding and progressive training
Closed Guard • Open Guard • Side Control • Half Guard • Mount • Back Control & Escapes
INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED
Our Intermediate and Advanced classes are designed for students who already have a good understanding of the fundamentals and are ready to explore Jiu Jitsu at a deeper level.
Sessions include more advanced techniques, combinations, transitions, strategy and positional problem-solving, together with more live training.
Students are encouraged to begin developing their own individual Jiu Jitsu game while continuing to refine their fundamentals.
Level: Blue Belts to Black Belts
Duration: 60 minutes
Focus: Advanced technique, strategy, positional training and sparring
SPARRING
Sparring is where students have the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice through live training.
These sessions help students develop timing, reactions, decision-making and the ability to apply techniques against a resisting training partner.
Sparring is valuable for recreational students as well as competitors, but students are introduced to live training progressively when they are ready.
Level: Experienced students
Duration: 45 minutes
Focus: Live positional and open sparring
GI & NO-GI
Our timetable includes training in both the traditional Gi and No-Gi.
Both follow the same principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, while offering different grips, techniques and styles of movement.
Training both allows students to develop a more complete understanding of grappling.
