Behind every successful academy is a strong team of coaches who care about the development of their students.
At Grand Union Jiu Jitsu Brighton, our instructors bring together decades of experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, coaching and competition. But we believe being a great BJJ coach requires much more than technical knowledge.
A coach should be someone students can trust, learn from and look up to.
This is particularly important within our children’s programme, where our instructors have a responsibility not only to teach Jiu Jitsu, but also to reinforce the values we expect from every Grand Union student: respect, discipline, confidence, resilience and teamwork.
Led by Cesar Lima
Grand Union Brighton is led by founder and Head Instructor Cesar Lima, 4th Degree Black Belt under Roger Gracie.
Cesar began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Brazil in 1999 before moving to London in 2002 and training under Roger Gracie.
He began leading Roger Gracie’s first affiliated academy in Central London in 2006 and later established Grand Union Jiu Jitsu Brighton, where he has been teaching since 2013.
Throughout his coaching career, Cesar has helped students progress from complete beginners through every stage of their Jiu Jitsu journey, including more than 40 students who have reached black belt level.
Today, his focus is not only on developing skilled Jiu Jitsu practitioners, but also on building a coaching team capable of passing on the same standards, knowledge and values to the next generation.
MORE THAN INSTRUCTORS
At Grand Union, we don't want instructors who simply demonstrate techniques and leave the mat.
Our coaching team is expected to know our students, understand their development and create an environment where everyone from a four-year-old attending their first class to an experienced black belt feels supported and challenged appropriately.
For our younger students especially, we recognise the influence a good coach can have.
That's why we place such importance on positive role models.
We want children and teenagers to be surrounded by people who demonstrate the same qualities we're asking them to develop: discipline, respect, consistency, humility and a strong work ethic.
ONE TEAM. ONE STANDARD.
Every instructor has their own personality, experience and style of Jiu Jitsu, but our coaching philosophy remains consistent throughout the academy.
Our coaches work together to provide a structured progression from our youngest students through Teens and into the Adult programme.
A child can begin their journey with us at four years old and potentially continue developing within the same academy, community and coaching system all the way to black belt.
